KnowDental Games

Through experience and observation, KnowDental has developed a variety of tools to engage children in a fun and meaningful way. We have found that there is no perfect system as every child is incredibly unique. It is well known that kids learn best when they are having fun, but not everyone enjoys every game.

At KnowDental we take the times to consider our audience regarding culture, age, skill level and much more. The games are chosen in a very specific and customized order to create a personalized story that speaks to every child. While some children thrive on competition and high energy, others may be thoughtful and prefer to create. The systems KnowDental develops speaks to everyone.

KD Cavity

Learn what a cavity really is

What is it?

The KD Cavity game is an incredibly engaging activity to show kids what cavities really are in a way that is visual, rewarding and memorable! With KD Cavity, we get the children to cause and fill the cavity themselves, using our hand-made models and child-friendly materials.

What will we need?

  • A model of a molar created with Styrofoam with a hard layer covering the tooth crown mimicking the natural hard tooth exterior
  • 2 plastic containers containing the decay forming acid
  • 2 pieces of gauze
  • Gloves for the user to wear while doing the experiment • On the inside of the box are graphic information about dental decay and the steps of the experiment.
  • On the outside of the box there are goals to be discussed and agreed upon between the trainer and the users to ameliorate oral health.

How does it work?

• At the correct time during the session after explaining dental decay the user is instructed to retrieve the gloves from the gloves hole on the box and wear them.
• Then to open the box following the path cut through.
• The is then rotated 90 degrees to lie on the printed shadow on the box. The box acts as a protective layer to prevent damage to any underlying surface.
• A wooden tooth pick is held and touches the surface of the crown to feel its hardness
• The user then holds one of the plastic containers and pours it on the crown of the molar tooth.
• The effervescence and the reaction are seen by the user showing an amplification of the reaction that causes dental decay in nature.
• The area of the reaction is then wiped with the gauze.
• The second container is then poured on the same area representing the repeated acid attack on the tooth.
• The area is wiped again with gauze.
• The user is instructed to touch the reaction area, where decay is now seen, with the toothpick to see how soft it became.
• The user keeps the tooth and the box to use again when agreeing on the habits to change.

Why do we use it?

• Practical application of the reaction that leads to dental decay
• Seeing the cavity happens in real life with very fast mimicking the much slower and subtle reaction in nature
• Children sharing the excitement of seeing such a non-conventional reaction reinforces the image in their minds
• Seeing that an external substance is responsible for a cavity
• Seeing the gauze or water with its non-reactive washing effect reinforces their feeling of how different effects substances have on our body
• The amelioration goals agreed upon are clearly printed on the back of the box, encouraging visualization and hence a stronger sense of commitment.
