Dr. Karim ElMofty the founder of KnowDental has experience in training more than 3000 adults and children on Oral Health and Hygiene to date. He pitched his vision to a team of three, and now the team grew to about 25 part-timers. He was on the team that broke the Guinness World Record for largest oral hygiene session in Egypt, 2015. Besides his passion for oral health education and management of KnowDental, he is a full time dentist. He is also an amateur fisherman and a "sandmaster" 🙂
Since the first Oral Health Education session - years before KnowDental - it was clear that stating facts and information to increase knowledge is easy. The real challenge was how to push the audience, to use the new information to change their own behavior, attitude and practice of oral hygiene even better. As we live in the age where selecting and using information is much more valuable than simply finding it.
This new found observation at the time has opened the doors to the world of behavior change within Public health, and accordingly a practical scheme for the OHE sessions started to develop , later to become one of Knowdental pillars "The Session Design".
One of the very important points of focus in KnowDental' s session design is Internal motivation. How to internally motivate our audience? How to strike the right chords? How to make them tell the story of what they learned today at home? How to attach every fact to some of their everyday objects so they are constantly reminded with what they learned and saw?
This leads to a realization that besides planning carefully the words to use and their sequence, the use of tools and games is inevitable and VITAL. Those tools and games have to be age specific and culture specific.
